WordPress or Custom Development: Which Should You Choose?
Choosing between WordPress and custom development is not a choice best made from technology names. Look first at what information needs regular publishing, who approves it, what existing work or data needs connecting, and who will support the result after launch.
Separate editorial work from business-specific workflow
Publishing company information, services, cases and news is different from a distinctive booking, application, member, stock or internal process. They do not always need the same system. A CMS and a specialised function can be combined where that serves the work.
1. Start with the information and people who update it
Where a team regularly publishes pages, news, cases or recruitment information, a CMS with a clear editing interface and ownership can be a strong fit. Establish who writes, checks facts and publishes, and whether the process will survive a change of staff. WordPress can separate what people can do through roles and capabilities.
2. Isolate the distinctive workflow or integration
Quote conditions, member-specific information, specialised search, data exchange between systems, applications and review flows may justify dedicated functions or an application. Being distinctive does not automatically mean a large build. Identify the one flow that most needs improvement before expanding the scope.
3. Consider the burden of change and maintenance
Both approaches need updates, backups, permissions, dependency checks, testing and handover. Look beyond initial cost to how often changes will be requested, what the organisation can manage and who can investigate when something goes wrong. It is more useful to maintain a smaller necessary system responsibly than to build functions no one can own.
4. Do not make the first choice close future options
A team may begin with a CMS for publishing and add a connected business function later. A specialised system may also benefit from editable website pages around it. Treat the decision as a boundary between data, users and responsibility rather than a permanent either/or label.
CHOOSE FROM THE WORK
Could the operating need make the first technical decision clearer?
We can start with current publishing, workflow, data and responsibilities to consider a practical first structure.
