Digital Trends 2023: Generative AI, Accessibility, and Trust
In 2023, the question shifted from what digital tools could do to what organisations should delegate—and what people still needed to own. Generative AI entered everyday work, accessibility guidance evolved, and the conversation around responsible AI became more concrete. This is a practical look back at the changes that continue to shape a useful business website.
The 2023 takeaway
More tools alone do not create a better digital presence. Accurate and useful information, journeys that more people can use, and responsible operations became the essentials for a credible customer experience.
1. Generative AI entered the working conversation
During 2023, teams began experimenting with generative AI for drafting, summarising, ideation, and coding support. The meaningful opportunity was never to hand a brand’s judgement to a tool. It was to give people a stronger starting point: organising research, comparing approaches, or preparing first drafts that an experienced person could improve.
The same principle applies to a website. AI can accelerate an outline, but it cannot replace the specific answers a potential customer needs: how you work, why your approach differs, what a project costs, and what real experience sits behind the promise. First-hand knowledge, examples, and careful editorial review turn a fast draft into a trustworthy sales asset.
2. Accessibility became part of product quality
In October 2023, WCAG 2.2 became a W3C Recommendation. Its guidance includes clearer keyboard focus, reduced friction in authentication, and other considerations that benefit much more than a narrow audience. They help a person using a phone one-handed, someone reading outdoors in bright light, or anyone trying to complete an enquiry quickly.
For a business website, colour contrast, meaningful heading structure, image alt text, and comprehensible forms should not be left until the end. They help people use the site, and they give search engines clearer signals about the page’s meaning.
3. AI needed governance as well as enthusiasm
As AI use broadened, “because we can” stopped being a sufficient operating principle. Political agreement on the EU AI Act was reached at the end of 2023, leading into formal regulation the following year. This is not a claim that every Japanese company faces the same legal requirements. It is, however, a useful prompt to consider data handling, copyright, misinformation, and responsibility for final review.
Even a small team can make a good start by deciding which information never goes into an AI tool, who reviews material before publication, and where generated material is appropriate. Speed and trust are not opposing goals.
Three ways to apply this to your website
- Add evidence to your content: document your work, process, and informed point of view.
- Test for ease of use: check mobile journeys, keyboard access, forms, and colour contrast in real conditions.
- Set AI working rules: define the reviewer and the information that must not be used.
What 2023 taught us
2023 was a year of conspicuous new technology, but also a year to revisit the fundamentals. A digital strategy that lasts is not about chasing every trend. It is about repeatedly delivering useful information in a form people can find, understand, and use with confidence.
